Why American Kenpo?

Private and available for group bookings | 202.368.4395:

American Kenpo Karate is often referred to as “The science of street fighting.” It is a system that has gotten rid of much of the traditional movements and traditional stances of other systems. Chinese systems are called “Soft” and have much circular movement with multiple strike techniques in them and Japanese systems are “Hard” arts based mostly on power and linear-minimalist movement less is more. Kenpo takes a combination of five forms of animal Kung-fu (Chinese Kenpo), Japanese Karate combined with that (Okinawan Kenpo) and was modernized by William Chow and later Edmund K. Parker who was also a boxer and a street fighter.

People don’t walk around with Swords, spears, throwing stars, Sais or Nunchaku in today’s world. I have great respect for those traditional and historic weapons for their beauty, artistry and rooted-tradition but they have no place in modern society when speaking about modern day self-defense. we live in a world that people carry knives and guns. I also differ from many instructors in that I don’t believe in spending time training with firearms as blunt force objects. They are designed for a purpose and I train my students to use that weapon in a manner commensurate to its intended purpose. I focus on practicality and reality. You can train with sticks, because it’s reasonable to assume that you may be attacked with one. A broom handle, a 2X4, a piece of wood lying around on the ground. As a Martial Artist you should be able to defend against these attacks and use that tool as a weapon. People carry knives and it’s reasonable and realistic to expect that one could get attacked by someone wielding a knife. As a Martial Artist you should be able to defend against these attacks and use that tool as a weapon. People carry guns and it’s reasonable and realistic to expect that one could get attacked by someone wielding a gun and again as a Martial Artist you should be able to defend against these attacks and use that tool as a weapon. Those that train with me learn to use all of these weapons and how to defend against attacks from any of them.
